Staffing Update
We welcome Ms Cheryl Phillips to the Richmond State School Staff from Term 4. Cheryl will be supported in her transitions to Richmond over the coming weeks before Miss Tanya Sinden begins leave in Week 4.
Slime Spectacular
Thank you so much for continuously supporting our school, especially through fundraising. In Term 4, we are hosting a Slime Spectacular School Fun Run to help us fundraise for a new P-2 playground. To achieve our goal, we need to raise $10,000.00 as a school community.
When is the Slime Spectacular School Fun Run? We will be hosting our Slime Spectacular School Fun Run on 1/12/21, from 9:00am to 1:00pm. Make sure students bring WHITE (or light coloured clothes) to wear during the Fun Run. They will be covered in vibrant, non-toxic slime from head to toe!
Term 4 Dates
We have a jampacked Term 4 ahead of us, please ensure that you are following our school Facebook page, subscribed to Schoolzine and also regularly check your child/children’s school bag for notes. Family calendars have been sent home to support clear communication and organisation.
Kind Regards,
Mrs Elizabeth Mayo

"The Road to Regulation"
Here at Richmond State School, our students in Prep to Year 4 are beginning to learn about self-regulation and identifying emotions in themselves and others. Self-regulation can go by many names, such as self-control, self-management, and impulse control. It is defined as the best state of alertness of both the body and emotions for the specific situation. For example, when a student plays on the playground or in a competitive game, it is beneficial to have a higher state of alertness. However, that same state would not be appropriate in the library. You may begin to hear your child/ren talk about being in different ‘Zones’.
The ‘Zones of Regulation’ is an evidence-based program which our teachers are utilising as a resource, in addition to the Australian Curriculum, to support your child’s social and emotional learning.
There are four different ‘Zones’: Blue Zone, Green Zone, Yellow Zone and Red Zone. It is important to note that everyone experiences all of the Zones—the Red and Yellow Zones are not the “bad” or “naughty” Zones.
Some of the emotions that are experienced in each of the Zones are:
Blue Zone: Hurt, sad, tired, sick, exhausted, shy, bored
Green Zone: Good, calm, appreciated, proud, thankful, happy, good listener, ready to learn.
Yellow Zone: Excited, frustrated, nervous, anxious, worried, silly, annoyed, overwhelmed, scared.
Red Zone: Mean, mad, yelling, angry, aggressive, terrified, out of control.
A critical aspect of this curriculum is that all team members know and understand The Zones language. This creates a comfortable and supportive environment for the student to practice their self-regulation skills. It also helps the student learn the skills more quickly and be more likely to apply them in many situations. You can support your child/ren during this process by doing the following:
Use the language and talk about the concepts of The Zones as they apply to you in a variety of environments.
Make comments aloud so the student understands it is natural that we all experience the different Zones and use strategies to control (or regulate) ourselves. For example, “This is really frustrating me and making me go into the Yellow Zone. I need to use a tool to calm down. I will take some deep breaths.”
If you would like further information about our social and emotional learning program or The Zones, please see one of our Prep to Year 4 Teachers.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
Positive Reinforcement – PBL Rewards
The aim of whole school reinforcement is to establish a system which helps staff to recognise students for effort and achievement. All students are able to receive whole school reinforcers and are never excluded from whole school celebrations or events organised as part of the whole school reinforcement system.
Classroom Reward Menus
During our first week back for Term 4, students and teachers worked collaboratively to create their individual class reward menus. The reward menus incorporated both individual student and whole class rewards. Students and classes are able to redeem rewards once they have reached the allocated Happy Voucher target. Students were able to contribute and provide ideas for what they would like to see as rewards for allocated Happy Voucher targets. Some example rewards include:
- Be a classroom leader or helper
- Homework pass
- Choose class game
- Choose where to sit
- Work with a friend

Around Our School
Richmond State School was very fortunate to have indigenous artists visit in Week 2. Students were treated to face painting and painting their own boomerang that they were able to take home and show their families. We also got to enjoy the magical sounds of the didjeridoo, with some lucky students having a go at learning how to play.
I think we can all agree that a fantastic time was had by all. This visit was made possible through a collaboration with the Cloncurry Kindy.
Thank you for visiting our school Aunty Linda and Daryl.
