Cluster Moderation – Prep, Year 6 & Year 10
In recent weeks staff from Richmond State School have been involved in a Cluster Moderation Project. The project is a collaboration between; Cloncurry, Mornington Island, Normanton, Hughenden, Burketown, Karumba and Doomadgee State Schools.
The purpose of this project is to ensure consistent and accurate teacher judgments about the quality of student responses to summative assessment tasks and work contained in assessment folios in Prep to Year 10. Our school received positive feedback from participants about student work and our professional judgements.
Assistant Regional Director (ARD) - Visit
Wednesday of Week 9 we will welcome Mrs Helen McCullough to Richmond State School as our Acting ARD. During the visit, myself and Helen will be visiting classrooms to view learning walls, speak with students about their learning using the 5 Questions for Students and view some work samples.
5 Questions for Students
- What are you learning?
- How you are going?
- How do you know?
- How can you improve?
- Where can you go for help?
Post our classrooms walkthroughs, we will then have some time discussing our Explicit Improvement Agenda and the progress we have made throughout 2021 and what our next steps are.
Head of Department - Curriculum
All students are welcomed, engaged, learning and achieving at Richmond State School
Richmond State School is committed to providing high quality education to all students, in line with the Department of Education's renewed Inclusive Education Policy which was released in August this year.
What is meant by 'inclusive education?
Inclusive education means that students can access and fully participate in learning, alongside their similar-aged peers, supported by reasonable adjustments and teaching strategies tailored to meet their individual needs. Inclusion is embedded in all aspects of school life, and is supported by culture, policies and every day practices.
What does 'inclusive education' look like at Richmond State School?
Collaboration with students, families and the community: We work with students, parents and caregivers, and other organisations, including teacher and professional associations, as respected and valued partners in inclusive education. We support students, parents, caregivers and families to have a voice and be heard. Their views are considered in decision making at all levels.
Monitoring and evaluation: Monitoring progress and academic achievement of all students will always be a priority at Richmond State School. Richmond State School staff have been working hard to monitor and review students at an individual level, through marker student inquiry cycles, and through our continued moderation work as part of our 2021 Explicit Improvement Agenda.
Respecting and valuing diversity: All students and families feel, and are, welcomed, respected, included and safe at our school. We embrace diversity as a strength and support respectful relationships within the school community and between students. We address the different barriers experienced by students and develop strategies and plans to support inclusive education for our student population.
Accessible learning environments: We are working hard to ensure that our school environment, including play areas and classrooms are designed to enable all students access and full participation in learning. We ensure that students can access and participate in school activities and events.
Effective transitions: The transition from early childhood and care settings to school and from Richmond State School to Senior Education (whether that be boarding school and distance education) are significant milestones in students' lives. Richmond State School is continuing to work in partnership with students, families, and other educational organisations to plan and support successful transitions at all points in our learner's education.
For more information about our inclusive practices at Richmond State School or how we are supporting your child, please speak to either your child's classroom teacher or Miss Sinden. Our Improvement Agenda
Postive Behaviour for Learning
Over the term our students have been rewarded with Happy Vouchers for following our school's expectations: Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Safe and Be a Learner. Happy Vouchers are used to access individual and class rewards which have been developed with students on a class by class basis.
On Thursday and Friday Week 10, our students will have an opportunity to access their whole class rewards that they have been working towards. These rewards include activities such as pizza parties, free dress, treasure hunts, cooking and discos. Teachers and students work together to set these goals at the start of each term. This process promotes camaraderie and allows our students to set high expectations for themselves.
We will also be engaging in Master Classes on Thursday and Friday of Week 10. The purpose of the 2-day event is to provide a range of exciting opportunities for our students to engage in activities with staff and community members to develop 21st century learners. The theme for the event is "Growth & Gratitude". Examples of some of the activities that will be on offer include: broom making, woodwork, drone flying, collage making, Master Chef-cooking, cupcake baking, gardening, robotics, mosaics, scrunchie making, gratitude rocks and fishing. Students will sign up for their selected activities during their PBL lesson in Week 9.
