RSS Newsletter Week 4 Term 4 2021
From the Principal
I have recently been off-site attending the annual North Queensland Region Principal Learning Fair and am currently attending Principal Congress. During this time schools from throughout our region share their work and the alignment with the ways of working from the State Schools Division. I will be sharing information about this with staff in coming weeks.

2022 Explicit Improvement Agenda
I am currently working with staff, students and families to seek further feedback regarding our next steps for improvement into 2022. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. I am more than happy for individuals to email me, schedule a one-on-one meeting or to attend our upcoming P&C Meeting on the 8th November.

Preparing the Leaders of Tomorrow
Richmond State School’s 2021 Explicit Improvement Agenda has a strong focus on a student-centred approach to heightening student outcomes in a variety of learning areas. In Term 4, 2021 Richmond State School is excited to offer students who expressed an interest in Years 5-10 the opportunity to participate in the Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program. The students have been participating in the weekly program via web conference with Brian O’Neill, a specially trained Toastmaster and the Principal of Calen District State College.
The Youth Leadership Program is a workshop consisting of six (6) one-hour sessions that enable young people under the age of 18 to develop their communication and leadership skills through practical experience. In the workshops, young people learn valuable skills including:
· Evaluating their own speaking ability
· Preparing and giving speeches
· Giving impromptu talks
· Controlling their voice, vocabulary and gestures
· Giving constructive feedback and more
The Toastmaster Youth Leadership Program links to and extends upon classroom learning, supports students deliver oral presentations in a range of curriculum areas, supports their building of confidence and is supporting them in preparing and delivering 2022 leadership speeches (if they so wish). So far, the students have done a wonderful job of writing and delivering speeches on themselves and a topic of their interest. They are receiving and responding to individualised feedback from their speeches to improve each week and increasing the length of their speeches as their confidence grows.
We are very proud of these students for demonstrating our Richmond State School rule: Be a Learner by:
· participating in new activities,
· being confident, resilient and adaptable,
· recognising their strengths and setting challenging goals to improve, and
· seeking, reflecting and responding to feedback.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
The PBL team have developed and refined a number of consistent practices and resources to support our students and staff with PBL. We continually use evidence-based approaches to improve the positive culture needed for our school to be an effective learning environment.
The next step in the PBL journey is to ensure that parents and community members have a shared understanding of the terminology, behaviour expectations, logical consequences and the reward systems associated with PBL at Richmond State School. The purpose of this strategy is to ensure that all stakeholders are working together to support our students as they grow and become the future citizens of Richmond.
To ensure open communication with parents and community members, the PBL team have developed a Parent and Community Brochure that can be used as a quick reference guide to a number of key elements associated with PBL. We have also expanded our team and welcomed Wayne Milne, Yvonne Morris and Cr Patsy-Ann Fox as our parent and community representatives. Their role on the PBL team will be to provide parent and community perspectives to decision making and future planning. We will also continue to provide up-to-date information about future events in the newsletter, on Facebook and letters to parents.
Parents and community members are always welcome to provide feedback or ideas for future events.

WOW!
The response to our fundraising has been reamarkable! When people ask what is good about living in Richmond, this is what, the community spirit is awesome. Our community has been very supportive of the fundraising efforts our students are putting in to install a new Playground for our Prep to Year 2 students.
