Moderation
Each Tuesday after school, our staff engage in our weekly staff meeting. This week in our staff meeting, all staff 'moderated' student maths assessment tasks from Term 1. Moderation ensures consistent and accurate teacher judgments about the quality of student responses to assessment tasks and work contained in student assessment folios. We have been very impressed with the satndard of maths work our students have completed so far this term.
Term 2
We are currently finalising the Term 2 calendar, and oh my gosh, we have so many exciting things coming your way! Due to a number of public holidays, our students will only have 46 days of learning in Term 2 - which reminds us all of how vital attendance is. Please ensure you mark your calendars so you and your family are planned, organised and informed.
Student Leaders Morning Tea
One of the many highlights for me this week, has been hosting the leadership morning tea with our 2022 student leaders.
During our morning tea we discussed what the student leaders would like to achieve throughout 2022, how I can support them in their leadership journey, and how we can work together to improve our great school. Each of the student leaders crafted their goals for 2022. I am looking forward to supporting them all throughout the year.

Head of Department - Curriculum
Holidays are here, again! Wondering how you are going to keep your children entertained for two weeks? Never fear, I have listed a few activities, sites and ideas that might give you some inspiration to keep the kids learning through fun and games. They may not even realise they are learning still!
- An IT skill that all ages could benefit from is typing. Utilise https://www.typingclub.com/ for keyboard skills through games. There are many free online touch-typing sites and apps out there.
- Literacy – List instructions or draw pictures to guide a friendon an Easter Egg Hunt! Write your shopping list for you. Older students might start a personal diary, food log or exercise log.
- Numeracy – Make their own calendar for Term 2 or to count down to their birthday or special event. Do a jigsaw puzzle, a large one! Assist with a stocktake of cattle by counting the number of legs, not heads or items in your pantry. Represent the results in which ever way they like – tally marks, picture graph, numbers or bar graphs. If travelling in the car, ask your children how long will the trip take so they consider speed, distance and time, then ask again during the trip are we there yet, when will be get there? 😊
- Going camping? Check out the 100 super fun camping games for the whole family at https://whatmomslove.com/kids/camping-games-activities-for-kids/
Homework Centre
Learning Beyond the Bell, Homework Centre sessions will start week 2 of Term 2. Allocation of students to the Monday or Thursday session will remain the same as was allocated for this term.
A reminder that these sessions provide a supervised and suitable learning environment in which Richmond State School students can complete their homework before they go home. Students are to complete their homework tasks in the Library, under the supervision of teacher aides. Richmond State School positive behaviour for learning rules and expectations apply in these sessions.
As there is a waiting list for homework centre, please advise the school if your child/children will not be attending their allocated session for Term 2. Offers to attend the Learning Beyond the Bell sessions in Semester 2 (Term 3), will be sent out in June.
NAPLAN Online
Feedback from the year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students who participated in the practise NAPLAN online tests last Thursday was all about excitement and fun in the lower grades and a little mixed in the upper year levels with students expressing it was more engaging however they felt they could hand write faster than they could type. What did your son/daughter think about the online platform? Please have a chat to them about it.
The upcoming NAPLAN test days in term 2, should be treated as just another routine event on the school calendar. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure them that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and to advise them to simply do the best they can on the day. A great component within the NAPLAN online platform, is the ability to make adjustments for students with disability to enable them to access the tests on an equivalent basis to students without disability.
Please note, Parents or carers may withdraw their child from the tests to address issues such as religious beliefs and philosophical objections to testing. It is recommended that withdrawal be considered in consultation with your child's teacher. Any parent withdrawal must be via the formal notification form available from the office and must be received by the school principal prior to testing.

Student Leadership Development
In week 8, we had the pleasure of hosting yLead at our school. The Year 5/6 Julia Creek State School students joined with our Year 5/6 class on Wednesday, on Thursday our highschool students worked with the yLead team and on Friday the students leaders spent the morning enhancing their leadership skills.
Below is a letter sent to us from yLead presenters
"Thanks so much for giving Zoe and I the opportunity to empower the Richmond SS and Julia Creek SS students. We really value partnering with educators that share our passion for positive education and leadership development.
We had an absolute blast working with all the students as their involvement and energy were second to none. They had amazing ideas and came up with some pretty awesome initiatives they want to run which was awesome to see. The collaboration and respect towards one another was touching to see which is a testament to not only their character, but the educators that are with them every day, THANK YOU!!" George Conlon
