Student Learning
It has been a pleasure being in classrooms this week seeing the learning our students are demonstrating through a range of written tasks and problem solving activities. Our Teachers have been working incredibly hard to schedule teaching and learning over the term to ensure our students have the best opportunities to succeed with their learning and then demonstrate their learning in assessment tasks. When students are absent from school, they can often miss key content, concepts and teaching that can not be made up with 'worksheets' or activities that are sent home.
We encourage all families to liaise with the school regarding absence and time away from school so we can work in partnership to minimise the impacts of absence on student learning.
NCCD
Attached is an article with information about NCCD. If you have any questions please contact the school for more information.

Head of Department - Curriculum
It’s July! The first half of the year is over. Our motivation now is to make the 2nd half of the year better than the 1st half!
Report cards, parent teacher interviews and curriculum
Report cards based on semester one learning have been posted out. Reading your son/daughter’s report in conjunction with the parent curriculum overview for the respective terms will provide you with a solid understanding of what you child was learning and how well they are doing. You may notice that the report cards have ‘interview required’ on them. This is listed as ‘required’ because we would love to chat with you about your child/children’s progress, share great learning stories and work with you to make the next step in your child’s learning smooth and achievable. Please complete the parent teacher interview note sent home at the end of week 2 by marking three preferred times for each teacher you want to see. These are due back at school on Friday 29th July. Confirmation of allocated time will be advised the following week and parent teacher interviews will be held during the week 8th – 12th August. Parent curriculum overviews for term three will be distributed through week three.
Reading at home
It is really important students ‘learn to read’ in the early years so they are able to ‘read to learn’ through out their high school years. Learning to read starts when parents model reading to their children. Often this is done unconsciously – reading news/events on phones, newspapers, instructions, mail, catalogues, ads, TV guides on the screen, labels on objects or a novel! Sharing and talking about this experience with your son/daughter at the time is the beginning of their learning, all the concepts of print and your strategies of reading and purpose to reading. To build on this younger students should be practising or revising letter names and sounds and blends of sounds, practising sight words and reading any kind of text. Home readers are distributed weekly to each student. Please set aside time with your child to read these to them and them read to you. There are numerous tips for parents on the internet about reading but generally children become success readers with deliberate practice. Practice isn’t the thing you do once you’re good. It’s the thing you do that makes you good. This applies to any subject area.
Homework Club – Learning beyond the bell
Homework Club has begun on Monday and Thursday. If your son or daughter is unable to attend the session, on the day they are allocated, please advise the office. We are required to follow up on absentees. Your assistance in notifying the school of any absences, for homework club and any school day, is greatly appreciated.
Career Education Camp
Students in years 8, 9 and 10 will be travelling to Townsville to be immersed on tours and visits to various centres that will provide them with information on educational pathways available from year 10 and beyond. Students will be staying on campus at James Cook University in student accommodation for the week and also engaging in a lesson at Thuringowa State High School and William Ross State High School. The camp is from Friday 2nd to Friday 9th September 2022. A detailed schedule, final costing and consent forms are expected to be sent home by the end of week 3.

Positive Behaviour
Ahoy me harties, looks like students solved all of the puzzles to find the Treasure! Thank you to everyone for such a well organised and fun filled event.
Pirate Day
Snippets From the Classroom
Friday Fun from the Prep room, during HASS with Miss Kirk. Making 'bird's eye view' maps using familiar objects. We used different coloured and different sized bears to represent 'features' in our prep room. The big yellow bears being desks, the little bears being chairs, the big red bears being doors and the green bears being carpets.
The students in prep have been working hard so far this term to develop their mapping skills and develop knowledge around 'features' within their classroom.
Library
We have new books in the library. Some of the students are taking advantage of the new titles and are writing reviews on the texts they have read. This will help other students decide if the book is right for them.
This newsletter we have a review form Morgan Lawry. Thanks Morgan, I might even have to read this book myself.
Title: WORST WEEK EVER - MONDAY Part 2
I think this is a good book to read, it has funny pictures and phrases that are sure to give you a little giggle. My favourite part is on pages 160-168 where mum and the Principal of the school start dating. If you think that is interesting, read Monday Part 1 which will have all the information you need to read this book. By the way, they only take less then one week to read, sounds like a good deal to me. "Little time to read, good book, good deal is what I always say".

Let’s CONVERSE WITH OUR SCHOOL NURSE
Did you know that sleep is like food for your brain? While we sleep, the mind recharges and process the information it has been exposed to during the day. Moreover, sleep is the only part of the day that the body can rest and repair. Without adequate sleep, we may have problems with memory, concentrating, thinking, mood and reaction time. Getting enough sleep is also needed to strengthen the immune system and to maintain good long term physical and mental health.
Young adults require 8 - 10 hours of sleep to function at their best, and to support normal growth and development, however, on average Australian teenagers only sleep 6.5 – 7.5 hours per night. As parents, we can support our children to achieve good ‘sleep hygiene’ habits. ‘Sleep hygiene’ does not actually mean being ‘clean’ prior to going to bed! Rather, the term refers to the healthy habits, behaviours and environmental factors that can be managed to promote a good night’s sleep. Around puberty, the ‘body clock’ is temporarily altered. The clock is pushed forward, making it more difficult for them to fall asleep.
As parents, we can be healthy sleep role models for our children by practicing good ‘sleep hygiene’. Remember, try not to argue with your teen about bedtime, rather try to talk about the issue with them and together decide how to increase their quota of sleep.
Please consider professional assistance (GP) if these self-help ideas are not successful.
As the School Based Youth Health Nurse, I am available Mondays and Tuesdays to address any concerns or problems about your child’s health and wellbeing. My email is lhonn7@eq.edu.au.

Book Week 2022
Book week is fast approaching, it will be here before we know it.
Book week is from 20-26 August and this year asks your children to embrace the theme “Dreaming with Eyes Open”. This opens a world full of possibilities when it comes to kids book week costume ideas. This is an opportunity to escape into another world where your child can choose just about any costume for book week, that embraces Australia , its culture, animals, landscape and anything thier dreams desire.
Dreaming with Eyes Open is about stepping into your own story. It invokes thoughts of ancient times, and of listening to Country as the first storyteller. You can, of course, adapt it to your own dreams and future ambitions.
Staff are already planning ideas for costumes, looks like some fantastic ideas are being hatched.
How is everyone going getting their costumes ready? Here are some links to costume ideas to help you along your way.
