Week 2, Term 2 2021 RSS Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,
Welcome to Term 2, 2021. As discussed on parade, Term 2 is only 47 days, during which time we have: a significant amount of learning to engage in, a number of exciting events, numerous sporting opportunities and multiple public holidays. We will be working closely with families to support high attendance rates for all students to minimise them missing teaching and learning in their classrooms.
Newsletter
I am looking forward to hearing your feedback about our new look newsletter. We have migrated to our new online platform to improve readership and improve our communication with you, our community. Please feel free to share your thought with the school via email or pop in and see us.
Explicit Improvement Agenda - Wellbeing
Later this term, some of our Richmond State School students will be asked to take part in the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey.
We know that wellbeing and engagement are important parts of your child’s life at school. The department and our school are looking at ways to collect information on these important areas so we can support our students in the best way possible.
The QEW Survey is designed to measure how state school students view their wellbeing and engagement.
Results from this survey will tell us about students’ levels of wellbeing and engagement. This information will allow us to better support our students and meet their needs.
In 2021, the QEW Survey will take place between these dates: Monday 31 May to Friday 25 June, 2021
An information letter will be sent out to parents and carers closer to the time. If you have any questions, please contact the school.
Kind Regards
Elizabeth Mayo
Head of Department - Curriculum
NAPLAN 2021
Each year across the country students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
This year, students at Richmond State School will continue to complete NAPLAN in its paper form on Tuesday May 11th – 13th. Students who are absent those days will make up the missed tests on a ‘makeup day’. Federal, state and territory education ministers have agreed that all schools will transition from the current paper-based NAPLAN to NAPLAN Online by 2022 in order to provide a better and more precise assessment that is more engaging for students.
NAPLAN gives a point in time snapshot of how children are performing in reading, writing, spelling, punctuation, grammar and numeracy. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process – it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance.
What can I do to support my child?
Remind your child that NAPLAN is just another assessment like what they already do each term for all their subjects in class, it is not something to stress or worry about. On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for and students are not expected to do so. You can support your child by reassuring them that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program, and by reminding them on the day to simply do their best – that is all anyone can ever ask! The Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) does not recommend excessive preparation for NAPLAN or the use of services by coaching providers.
Where can I get more information?
For more information about NAPLAN:
• contact your child’s school
• contact your local test administration authority at nap.edu.au/TAA
• visit nap.edu.au

If you would like to discuss your child’s participation in NAPLAN 2021, please contact the school
